Customary law remains one of the most important and quintessential forms of political and social organization and regulation in the Sub-Saharan landscape. In my dissertation, I work to refine and conceptualize customary law as neo-autogenous Sub-Saharan (NAS) law in order to provide a better understanding of NAS laws origins, provide a strong foundation for a definational framework and acknowledge that NAS law is a discrete form of law. In my study, I create an original and the 1st quantitative NAS law data-set, specifically measuring national level tolerance for customary law in state constitutions. I find a significant t amount of provision for NAS law, with a considerable amount of variation across states. I also find that NAS law effects property transaction costs and women's rights attainment.
