It presents lively, controversial and critical discussions concerning such themes as the social constitution of gender; the nature of sexual oppression; the relation of gender to family, class, race and culture; and feminist perspectives on science and philosophy. It also includes leading essays on questions of ethics and difference in the law, such as privacy, pornography and reproductive rights. Gender and Power in the Japanese Visual Field PDF
By:Joshua S. Mostow,Norman Bryson,Maribeth Graybill
Published on 2003-01 by University of Hawaii Press

In this, the first collection in English of feminist-oriented research on Japanese art and visual culture, an international group of scholars examines representations of women in a wide range of visual work. The volume begins with Chino Kaori's now-classic essay Gender in Japanese Art, which introduced feminist theory to Japanese art. This is followed by a closer look at a famous thirteenth-century battle scroll and the production of bijin (beautiful women) prints within the world of Edoperiod advertising. A rare homoerotic picture-book is used to extrapolate the grammar of desire as represented in late seventeenth-century Edo. In the modern period, contributors consider the introduction to Meiji Japan of the Western nude and oil-painting and examine Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) and the role of one of its famous artists. The book then shifts its focus to an examination of paintings produced for the Japanese-sponsored annual salons held in colonial Korea. The post-war period comes under scrutiny in a study of the novel Woman in the Dunes and its film adaptation. The critical discourse that surrounded women artists of the late twentieth-century - the Super Girls of Art - i

Psychology and Gender PDF
By:Theo B. Sonderegger
Published on 1985 by U of Nebraska Press

Gender, an important concept in psychology, is brought into sharp focus in the 1984 Nebraska Symposium on Motivation, which presents important new findings in eight papers, four dealing with sex differences and four with gender as a variable.ø The papers on sex differences with Ann Anastasi's |Reciprocal Relations between Cognitive and Affective Development?with Implications for Sex Differences,| in which the author relates aptitudes aboutøthe sex appropriateness of behaviors to attitudes and task performance. The effects of prenatal sex hormones on gender identity and gender-roleøbehavior are the subject of the next paper, |Gender Differences: A Biosocial Perspective| by Anke A. Ehrhardt. In |Gender Identity and Its Implications for the Concepts of Masculinity and Femininity,|øJanet T. Spence proposes a new theoretical approach to the meanings of |femininity| and |masculinity.|ø|Sex Differences in Achievement Patterns| are Jacquelynne Eccles's concern in her paper. Gender is now studied as a variable in all areas of psychology, several of which are represented in the next four papers. The concept is viewed in the light of attribution theory by Virginia E. O'Leary and Ranald D. Hansen inø|Sex as an Attributional Fact.|øSandra Lipsitz Bem, in |Androgeny and Gender Schema Theory: A Conceptual and Empirical Integration,| reviews her studies of gender-schematic processing and offers strategies for parents who wish to raise gender-schematic children in a gender-schematic society. Joan C. Martin'sø|Perinatal Psychoactive Drug Use: Effects on Gender, Development, and Function in Offspring|øfocuses on the sex-ratio effects of nicotine, alcohol, and barbiturates on the offspring of rats to whom those drugs were administered during their pregnancy. Differential effects on women and men of cultural attitudes about obesity are the subject ofø|Women and Weight: A Normative Discontent| by Judith Rodin, Lisa Silberstein, and Ruth Striegel-Moore. An introduction by Theo B. Sonderegger, professor of psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, places the papers in the context of research on sex differences and gender as a variable.

Under the Microscope: Customary Justice Systems in Northern Mali PDF
By:Diana Goff,Madina Diallo,Anca-Elena Ursu
Published on 2017 by

This report reveals heretofore undocumented information about the customary justice systems in northern Mali, which we gathered from 108 interviews across the regions of Gao, Mopti and Tombouctou. This information can be utilized by national and international stakeholders who see further engagement with these systems as an essential part of a multi-pronged effort to bring peace to Mali in the wake of the 2012 crisis. The report's main findings are sevenfold: 1) as each locality has its own traditions, each will require a context specific approach; 2) where interviewees specified that certain capacity building or change initiatives would be welcome, it is advantageous to build on this existing momentum for change; 3) justice gaps identified by interviewees are ripe areas for engagement; 4) ensuring fair treatment of vulnerable groups will likely require the use of interventions such as quotas, the creation of competing mechanisms, and community debate on whether biased treatment aligns with the core values of the local customary mechanisms; 5) it would be beneficial to help the customary and formal justice systems create a more coherent system for working together through facilitating dialogue between the groups at the local or national level; 6) a follow-up study targeting the youth population, which this study was not able to effectively reach, would be helpful to ensure their buy-in for the future use of these mechanisms; and 7) some recommendations made by the interviewees will need to be addressed by a sector-wide approach in order to be effectively addressed.

Customary Land Tenure and Registration in Australia and Papua New Guinea PDF
By:James F. Weiner,Katie Glaskin
Published on 2007-06-01 by ANU E Press

The main theme of this volume is a discussion of the ways in which legal mechanisms, such as the Land Groups Incorporation Act (1974) in PNG, and the Native Title Act (1993) in Australia, do not, as they purport, serve merely to identify and register already-existing customary indigenous landowning groups in these countries. Because the legislation is an integral part of the way in which indigenous people are defined and managed in relation to the State, it serves to elicit particular responses in landowner organisation and self-identification on the part of indigenous people. These pieces of legislation actively contour the progressive evolution of landowner social, territorial and political organisation at all levels in these nation states. The contributors to this volume provide in-depth anthropological case studies of social structural and cultural transformations engendered by the confrontation between states, developers and indigenous communities over rights to customarily owned land.

American Presidential Candidate Spouses PDF
By:Laurel Elder,Brian Frederick,Barbara Burrell
Published on 2018-03-20 by Springer

The book offers a comprehensive analysis of public opinion toward presidential candidate spouses over the course of three decades, drawing on multiple theoretical frameworks including the concept of “new traditionalism” and a plethora of empirical data to explore why some spouses engender greater support than others—and what these reactions reveal about the American public and the gendered nature of the American presidency. Recognizing that presidential candidate spouses are important but understudied political actors, this book provides extensive analysis of public evaluations of Bill Clinton and Melania Trump during the 2016 presidential election as well as the presidential candidate spouses in the 1992 and 2012 elections and places public reaction to these individuals in historical context. The book considers important trends in U.S. elections including party polarization from the distinctive vantage points of candidate spouses and explores the symbolic importance of historic firsts including the first African American candidate spouse and the first male candidate spouse. No other work provides a systematic exploration of public opinion towards candidate spouses as distinct political entities across the modern political era.
